Ayur (life) Veda (science)
Sarvani Ayurveda's literal translation from Sanskrit is "universal life science." Ayurveda is one of the World’s oldest and longest standing holistic healing systems dating back over 5,000 years. In Ayurveda, we use the knowledge of the doshas (elements), dhatus (body tissues) and chakras (energy centers throughout the subtle body) and their correlation to different bodily functions through the observation of the pulse, tongue and Jyotish (Vedic astrological chart.) These doshas, dhatus and chakras and the qualities they possess allow us to detect imbalance within the physiology, and use that information to bring the body back into a state of balance and optimal health. Being a holistic healing system, Ayurveda acknowledges the integral connection between mind, body and spirit, and understands that balance and health cannot be created unless all spheres are nurtured and the causative factors and imbalances affecting all are addressed. One of the most significant benefits of Ayurveda is the preventative approach to healing. We not only have the ability to help correct current imbalances creating recognizable symptoms within the body, but also the ability to help prevent the rise of further issues prior to them becoming problematic.
Why the Ayurvedic approach to healing is needed now more than ever
In the United Stated alone, more than 125 million people afflicted with chronic disease. Over 40 million people are uninsured and another 36 million are under insured.
The 4 leading causes of death in this country are as follows -
1st) Heart disease - About 610,000 people die from heart disease each year in the United States. It is the #1 leading cause of death in women over the age of 25. Diabetes, smoking, excessive use of alcohol or caffeine, drug abuse, poor diet and stress are leading causative factors.
2nd) Cancer - It is thought that up to 80% of cancers are preventable, mainly the result of environmental factors.
3rd) Stroke - More than 700,000 strokes occur each year, as many as 2/3 are preventable. It is the most expensive disease to treat.
4th) Modern Medicine - 106,000 deaths each year are due to known effects of drugs. Medication error harms more than 1.5 million American's each year and costs over $3.5 billion to treat. There are more than 98,000 deaths due to medical errors per year and 204,000 deaths due to the medical profession alone, making modern medicine the 4th leading cause of death in this country.
Preventable disease and illness makes up 80% of the stress of illness and 90% of all costs, and is responsible for 8 of 9 leading categories of death. More than 50% of deaths each year are preventable. With a strained, unhinged and highly overwhelmed health care system, Ayurveda offers us what is desperately needed - a practical yet essential system of preventable medicine that is inexpensive, safe and easy to administer.
